MOTIVATION FOR CREATING THIS SCHOLARSHIP – LORI’S WORDS
My husband, Rob and I wanted to grow our family after having our first son, Bobby. We were shocked when we struggled with infertility after having our first son with no complications. After years of fertility specialists, artificial insemination, and failed in vitro fertilization, we were delighted to find out I was pregnant. My pregnancy was absolutely nothing like my first pregnancy. I was convinced that something was wrong, but my family and doctors assured me that no two pregnancies are the same and everything was going as planned. On Thanksgiving morning 2001, I woke up early to get ready for a big day of celebrating. I felt off, but contributed it to being 21.5 weeks pregnant and stress that comes with the holiday season. While getting ready I started having severe cramps. I knew something was wrong and went to the hospital immediately. Once I was examined the doctor told me that I would be delivering my son at some point that day. I was informed that while he still had a heartbeat at this time, he would not survive. No amount of begging or pleading with the doctors changed the outcome. Shortly after noon on November 26, 2001, our son, Nathaniel Anthony Romero, was born forever sleeping. This rocked our world and sent us into a long depression. We finally decided to use our pain in a meaningful way. My husband, Rob and I went through foster parenting classes and became licensed foster parents. We fostered 52 children over a ten-year span and ultimately adopted 4 amazing children. We used our pain for a purpose and would like to recognize Nathaniel for inspiring us to give the love, hopes, and dreams we held for him to several children going through their own battles.
